Prize for best MSc thesis for Maarten Branssen

Supported Light Metal Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage and Catalysis

Supported light metal hydrides are promising candidates for the reversible, safe and compact storage of hydrogen, which is expected to play a central role as an energy carriere in a future, more sustainable society. Confinement of light metal hydrides in nanoporous matrix can have strong beneficial impact on hydrogen sorption properties. We both fundamentally and practically investigate particle size and support effects for nanostructured magnesium- and lithium-based materials, alanates and boronates, for application in solid state hydrogen storage, but also for battery and catalytic applications. The Stability of Nanoparticles for Sustainable Catalysis, Arjen van de Glind, Roy van den Berg, Nazila Masoud, Gang Wang, Jeroen van den Reijen (UU F&M, US-DOE EFRC, Haldor Topsoe, NWO-Vici, NRSCC)

The unique size-and shape dependent properties displayed by metal clusters and small nanoparticles are a strongly emerging topic in catalysis, yield unprecedented high activities and selectivities for existing reactions, and allow mining of  a range of so far unexplored chemistry. However, metal nanoparticles have an inherent tendency to grow into larger crystallites. We investigate how to stabilize metal (Au, Cu, Co, Ag) nanoparticles and quantum dots in porous supports, and how this affacts their performance as catalysts for production of solar fuels and of chemicals and fuels from synthesis gas. See for instance our recent Nature Materials paper on methanol synthesis catalysts.

Fundamentals of Catalyst Preparation using Model Supports

Heterogenous catalysts often consist of nanosized small metal(oxide) particles on an oxidic support. Activity and selectivity critically depend on the particle size. However the preparation of these supported nanoparticles (which is often done by impregnation of a porous support with a precursor of the active phase, drying, and further heat treatment) is still more an art than a science. We use very well defined support materials (such as ordered mesoporous silica) and advanced characterisation techniques to understand the fundamentals of catalyst preparation, and how the process steps can be tuned to achieve highly active, selective and stable catalysts, as illustrated for instance by our paper on the preparation of supported Cu nanoparticles.

Electron Tomography on 3D Nanostructured Materials,
Jovana Zecevic, Ying Wei (NRSCC, BASF, BP)

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is a standard tool to characterise thin slices of materials with nanometer resolution. Electron tomography extends these characterisation possibilities into the third dimension. Series of TEM images are taken at different tilt angles, yielding 3D structural information. Research ranges from studying mesoporous in zeolite crystals, metal nanoparticles locations in composite materials, to industrially relevant complex systems such as Pt/zeolite Y hydrotreating catalysts. Advanced image analysis is essential to unravel the 3D structure on a nanoscale. See for instance our recent Angewandte paper on mesoporosity in zeolite Y.
